How many Christians are there in Afghanistan?

Open Doors estimates that there are thousands of Christians in Afghanistan, but it’s difficult to know exactly how many there are because Afghan Christians must keep their faith completely secret.

Why are Christians persecuted in Afghanistan?

It’s illegal to leave Islam in Afghanistan. It’s a tribal society, and loyalty to your family, clan and tribe are incredibly important. Leaving Islam is seen as a betrayal by families and communities, because being a Muslim is seen as a core part of Afghan identity.

What’s life like for Christians in Afghanistan?

Those who decide to follow Jesus must do so in complete secret. They face danger not just from Islamic extremist groups, like the increasing threat from Taliban and so-called Islamic State, but from their own family. Christians may be sent to a mental hospital, because family members don’t believe that a sane person would leave Islam. Worse still, believers are often killed by their family.

How can I help Christians in Afghanistan?

Please keep praying for your brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. Your gifts and prayers make an enormous difference to those following Jesus no matter the cost.

Open Doors raises prayer support for persecuted believers in Afghanistan.
