How many Christians are there in Kuwait?
There are 512,000 Christians in Kuwait, out of a population of 4.2 million – about 12 per cent. Most of them are migrant workers.
Why are Christians persecuted in Kuwait?
Conversion from Islam to another faith is not officially recognised in Kuwait. Christian evangelism is strictly forbidden, as are Christian education and religious literature that is considered offensive to Islam.
What’s life like for Christians in Kuwait?
Kuwaiti believers from Muslim backgrounds face pressure from their families and communities to deny their faith. As this conversion is not officially recognised, they are unlikely to be permitted a Christian marriage or funeral. They also risk discrimination, harassment, police monitoring and intimidation by vigilante groups – though, thankfully, reports of Christians being killed, imprisoned or harmed for their faith are rare.
Christian migrant workers are free to worship informally, but their churches face many restrictions and the existing places registered for worship are too small. Registering new places of worship is extremely difficult.
