How many Christians are there in Oman?

There are five million people living in Oman. Christians are a tiny minority, numbering just 180,000. They make up 3.6 per cent of the population.

Why are Christians persecuted in Oman?

Oman is an absolute monarchy, and the government expects obedience from its citizens - they are kept under strict surveillance. Islam is the state religion and legislation is based mainly on Islamic law. Leaving Islam is seen as a betrayal of your tribe and family.

What’s life like for Christians in Oman?

Family and community put pressure on converts from Islam to recant their faith; they can be expelled from the family home and from their jobs, and face problems over child custody and inheritance. In this highly conservative society, it is especially difficult for Muslim women to choose to follow Christ.

Expatriate Christian communities are tolerated, but their facilities are restricted and Christian meetings are monitored to record any political statements and whether any Omani nationals are attending. All religious organisations must be registered with the authorities.

How can I help Christians in Oman?

Please keep praying for your brothers and sisters in Oman. Your gifts and prayers make an enormous difference to those following Jesus no matter the cost.

Open Doors supports the body of Christ on the Arabian Peninsula through organising prayer, distributing Scripture resources and training believers and pastors.
